Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

The oral glucose tolerance test provides insight into how effectively the body handles a glucose load.

After fasting, an individual drinks a glucose-containing solution, and blood sugar is measured two hours later (1,2).

Results are generally interpreted as:

  • Less than 140 mg/dL: Normal
  • 140–199 mg/dL: Prediabetes
  • 200 mg/dL or above: Diabetes

This test may be recommended when healthcare professionals require additional information before confirming a diagnosis.

Random Plasma Glucose Test

When a person presents with classic diabetes symptoms, a random blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher can support the diagnosis of diabetes (1).
